If your video assets aren't doing as well as you'd like, there are a number of factors you can analyze — including whether you've used subtitles in your content. Subtitles are incredibly popular and can be a factor in getting more eyes on your videos!
One 2024 Preply study found that half of Americans use subtitles most of the time, and Gen Z viewers are much more likely to want subtitles than older generations. Additionally, almost 70% of respondents said that subtitles help hold their attention when watching a video.
Viewing habits have changed, and audiences are now watching content throughout the day, whether they're at work, commuting, or in other public spaces. And let's not forget that social media platforms are automatically playing videos as people scroll, whether they've got subtitles or not.
Subtitles allow people to catch up on all your videos without interruption. Plus, they make your videos more accessible to a diverse audience, including those who are hard of hearing or who speak languages other than English.
So, how do you get started adding subtitles to your video content for increased engagement? How much time will it take? Will you have to purchase a new tool to get this done? Today, we'll answer these questions and provide a couple of options you can use to add subtitles to your videos.

We've compiled a list of the most popular tools marketers use to add subtitles to video content, as well as a brief overview of each option.
NOTE: Subtitles and closed captions are not exactly the same thing. Generally, subtitles refer to what's spoken, while captions can include descriptive info, info about speakers, and other details. For this blog, however, we will use the terms somewhat interchangeably because many companies bundle their captioning and subtitle features.
It's free to add captions to your YouTube videos, and the auto-captions are AI-powered — and while they're historically pretty inaccurate, you can edit them yourself. You can also do an upload of SRT files or type the subtitles out manually. YouTube supports 10 languages, and its built-in editor allows you to make corrections and adjust timing.
Adobe's subtitle capabilities are included with its Premiere Pro offering. You can try the program out for free at first, but you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan to continue to use Adobe's Speech to Text captioning capabilities.
The voice-to-text functionality allows more customization within the subtitles than standard options do because the AI essentially recognizes the speaking voices. Adobe supports 18 languages and provides stylized caption options to enhance your video content.
Billing itself as an option for advanced video editors, Movavi offers 20+ caption styles for your video, complete with stickers you can slap on the subtitles to further enhance them. You can also add subtitles via Movavi's mobile app when you're on the go.
Movavi offers a free trial, but there are some restrictions on what you can do with your free account. For example, video length is restricted for free accounts and all exported clips feature a watermark.
If you currently have an Apple iPhone or Mac and want a compatible subtitle option, iMovie might be a good choice for you — but be aware that you'll need to manually type your own subtitles into the program. iMovie does not allow you to import subtitle files, and it does not currently have a way to auto-generate subtitles.
Camtasia is a software program with video editing tools. Its pricing is dependent on which plan you choose. Like others on this list, you can try it out for free, but if you want to continue adding subtitles to your videos in Camtasia, you'll need to purchase a membership.
Camtasia adds subtitles in a few different ways, with the most popular being to upload your video file and then use Dynamic Captions to generate and style your captions.
Rev offers a global subtitle service with human translators, starting at $6.49/minute of video. While that's a pretty unique offering and definitely increases the accuracy of your subtitles, it also means you're looking at paying almost $400 just to add subtitles to a one-hour webinar video!
Alternatively, Rev has an AI-generated subtitle option that costs $0.25/minute, which would come out to $15/webinar. Not too expensive, but this can add up quickly if you're hosting a lot of events and want to subtitle the resulting video content.
Is open source your jam? Check out Subtitle Edit, a free subtitle editor that allows you to adjust subtitles, create subtitles from scratch, convert between different formats, and more. We aren't quite as DIY as this, but we commend you if you are!
Veed is another platform that auto-generates subtitles and allows caption file uploads. The company cites a 98.5% accuracy rate and leans on speech recognition software to increase speed and accuracy of your video subtitles. You can also play around with different styling and templates once you've got your subtitles.
